30 Years of Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia
How have the Atelier(s) changed over time?
Over the past ten years, Simonetta Cenci has gone from associate to partner and general director of the three Atelier(s), working alongside Alfonso Femia in their leadership; Sara Gottardo is associate architect in Paris and Brussels, while Amandine Aubrée, architect, and Liloye Chevallereau, R&D, are associates in Paris. An advisory board made up of seven people from Genoa and Milan discusses design and management issues: an exchange that is particularly enriching because the group is heterogeneous in age, experience, and geography.
Small and large milestones: the Atelier(s) are never still, daily practice is always driven and focused on new signals of change. A first important moment was the change of name… only that! The practice itself remained the same; then we founded a benefit company dedicated to research and special projects, 500×100.
We have carried out many studies, situations, and events, all in a fluid dialogue with professional practice—devices of exchange and mutual enrichment between design and research. Mediterranei Invisibili, Scuola Social Impact, Tempodacqua, La Biennale dello Stretto, InsidethewhaleXchildren are the most significant. But many others, complementary and supportive, represent the lifeblood of the Atelier(s).
In 2025, new decisions regarding the evolution of the Atelier(s) are taking shape… stay tuned.
