INAUGURATION OF THE MEMORIAL, ALESSANDRIA“The Memorial is a moment of sincere and spontaneous generosity of all the many people who worked to create it. Time has not soothed the intensity of feelings and values because it is never easy.” Alfonso Femia
The commemorative work that the City of Alessandria wanted to dedicate to the volunteers, civil protection and all those who worked to combat the flood of the Tanaro River that hit the city in 1994 was inaugurated today. The artistic project was created by Danilo Trogu, master ceramist, assisted by Alfonso Femia / Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia for the urban grafting of the work. The ceremony was held with the mayor Giorgio Angelo Abonante, the local authorities and the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
Located between the riverside and the embankment, near the Meier bridge, in the Cittadella area, the work is accessed via a flight of steps. It develops in a volume about one meter and twenty centimeters high, covered with porcelain stoneware slabs, donated by the firm Casalgrande Padana. Small glazed ceramic houses rest on the upper surface that appear to sink and are partly submerged. The names of the victims are engraved on one of the vertical sides.
An artistic gesture to pay permanent homage to those who worked to save lives and to those who, despite their efforts, lost theirs. A human and design warning on the relationship between water and the territory, on the design respect for natural elements.
