«The air around suddenly vibrated and tingled, as it were, like the air over intensely heated plates of iron. Beneath this atmospheric waving and curling, and partially beneath a thin layer of water, also, the whales were swimming. Seen in advance of all the other indications, the puffs of vapour they spouted, seemed their forerunning couriers and detached flying outriders.»

Herman Melville, Moby Dick 1851

Alfonso Femia’s contribution for The Plan’s initiative “The new tomorrow – Living and working after Covid-19”.

“Above all, we should be concerned about the psychological aspect because we will not feel free as before if there will not be elements that will guarantee this freedom. And they will not be devices but it will be a new way of feeling close to the territory.” AF

“For us, imagining light means bringing out the technological value that each product produces from the point of view of its evolution over time, but it also means to tell how we want to want to live these spaces today”. AF

Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia presents the project – developed for the competition organized by Fendi – for the new center of excellence in Florence and image of the Atelier(s)’ founding principles: responsibility in the relationship between territory, environment, work and production spaces. Light, matter, and human dimension.

The project is built through visual sequences, paths, and spaces. Each area, from the parking lot to the multifunctional space, has its very own relationship with the surrounding nature, creating a world suspended between the different land sections and the volumes that emerge from it.

“There are places that direct your gaze, guiding you in search of lines, and traces, that are hidden or partially visible.” AF
