” The tower is not a formal gesture, but intends to create a network of relationships with the surrounding areas and Milan.” AF
The ringroad represents the city walls of contemporary Milan, which today are no longer external but are ever more part of the city. Intensifying the density of this line, by means of towers, varied structures and green areas, the city could develop a “dense system”, just like Manhattan, along its edge, with a succession of parks inside with the city at the centre. One of the basic elements of the Master Plan for the development of the D3 area will be a series of towers, among which the “landmark tower” to the north of the ringroad, will rise more than 200 metres. The tower is not a formal gesture, but intends to create a network of relationships with the surrounding areas and Milan. It originates as a two-dimensional structure, which taking root in the ground, reaches up to the sky, looking for equilibrium. Just like a seal, perhaps… It has no main front, but a sequence of floors that comply with environmental and energy requirements and react in different ways during the day. It is located along the north-south axis, and the volumes become an almost abstract surface to the east and west. The tower that isn’t there.
